Understanding Your Skin Type: A Complete Guide

By Dr. Meenu Sethi

Your skin type is the foundation of any effective skincare routine. Understanding whether you have oily, dry, combination, sensitive, or normal skin helps you select products and treatments that work with your skin, not against it.

The Five Skin Types

**Normal Skin** is well-balanced — neither too oily nor too dry. It has fine pores, good blood circulation, and a smooth texture.

**Oily Skin** produces excess sebum, leading to enlarged pores, blackheads, and a shiny appearance. It's more prone to acne but tends to age more slowly.

**Dry Skin** feels tight and may appear dull. It can be flaky and is more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

**Combination Skin** features an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with drier cheeks.

**Sensitive Skin** reacts easily to products and environmental factors, showing redness, itching, or burning.

How to Determine Your Skin Type

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. Wait 30 minutes without applying any products. Observe your skin in natural light.
